How do you know if antique jewelry is really antique? ?

For my engagement ring, whenever it is that I get one, I want an antique engagement ring, preferably something from circa 1930s or 1940s. How will i be able to tell if it real and not an antique-inspired ring?

you can tell by the stones, the settings, the metal used, the name (if its signed), etc

Does anyone know of any good websites to learn more about the different types of antique jewelry, specifically rings?
I've tried looking for them myself in search engines, but all I come up with are the kind that sell wedding/engagment rings, and I thought maybe someone here might have something.

Can anyone recommend an antiue jewelry shop in Dublin?

I want to buy an antique ring to use as my wedding ring. I'm not looking for a traditional wedding ring design, just something old that looks good. Does anyone know good places to look for antique jewelry in Dublin?

you could try the pawn brokers one in Marlborough street and one in capel street thers probally others as well plus antique shops along bachelors quay have a nice day on your wedding anyway

Antique engagement ring and diamond certification?

In order to avoid any regret or ethical dillemma in supporting the diamond industry, I am opting to buy an antique diamond engagement ring from an antique jewelry dealer. I have found a gorgeous 1920s filligree solitaire, and would like to purchase. The diamond is an old european cut. The return policy is "no returns", so I want to be as careful as possible. Question is, are old diamonds like this often certified? How much does it cost to certify them? Also, the ring is 14k white gold (nickel alloy) with recent rhodium plating. Could the rhodium plating cover up any serious flaws or damage (no problems are apparent)? Thanks!

i don't think that you can have it certified, but you can have it appraised. costs about $50-$100. however, this jeweler should be able to tell you the clarity, color and carat weight of this diamond, or he's not a very good jeweler. the cut is also important. the old european cut is very beautiful, but the quality of the cut is also important. visit http://howtobuyadiamond.gia.edu/menu.htm for more diamond buying info.

also, the rhodium plating--i don't think that it can hide any serious flaws--just make sure the prongs are strong and will hold the diamond in place. it may also be a good idea to replace the white gold prongs with platinum ones, or all together a platinum head (the whole part that the diamond rests in) if it doesn't compromise the design on the ring. platinum does not flake away or wear down like gold can. the metal simply "displaces."

another thing to consider--i understand your feelings about the diamond industry with all the disgusting, inhumane things that we hear about, but one good thing about buying from retail store is that many retailers offer a lifetime guarentee on both the gold or platinum that holds the stone, and the diamond itself, meaning if the diamond falls out of the ring, the store will replace it free of charge. just something to consider.

Antique jewelers in Midwest (engagement rings)

I'm located in the Kansas City area and my girlfriend and I are shopping for engagement rings. She wants something that is antique, and we are struggling to find good antique jewelers in the area. We've mostly run across pawn shops and antique stores that have a few pieces of jewelry. We're hoping to find a store that specializes in antique jewelry and has a good selection of antique engagement rings. She likes that art deco/filigree look, and it's tough to find stores that carry it.

We're willing to travel a few hours if necessary, if there is a good store that has lots of antique jewelry. After all, you only get to go through this process one time, so why not have some fun with it?

Does anyone within a few hours of KC know of a good place? If so, any information on the store would be great appreciated.

i had the same problem you are having I did a lot of shopping online to find the ones we liked and called up the store to see where it was at and then drove to see it ( one guy had a friend in my town that had a sore and shipped it to him for me to look at ( didnt buy that one but i did pay for his shipping cost)...i found mine at an estate sale...also call your local dimond broker in KC ( ask a jewler who it is there) and ask him for help...they usually know where to find stuff.
