where can i find a simple source to determine the approx value of antique furniture and tools?

i have several pieces of old furniture, probably from 1800's, maybe some from England. also have some old tools, some hand tools and some power tools. what is a simple reference source to determine the approximate value of these type items? thanks for any help.......ray

I've seen some books at the bookstore which lists approx values. Go browse your local store.

You can also call local antique shops. Some shops use a local appraisal company/person. Get a recommendation. Or check your local "Yellow Pages". They should offer one for free.

Looking for Antique Information: 2 Antique “Planes” (Tools)?

The first one is small, about 6 inches long & has “Stanley”, “No. 220” in raises type around the front knob/handle & “Made in USA” on the back end, under the knob to adjust the angle of the blade.

The second one is large, about a foot long, & has “Millers Falls” embossed on the front of the blade & “Made in USA” under the blade, on the plane itself, between the blade & the back handle.

Someone told me that the two of them would bring in a couple hundred dollars if sold at the right antique show but I can’t find any information on Antique Tools like Planes.

They were my Grandfather’s & might actually be my Great Grandfather’s tools… I got them when he passed away.

I’m not sure if I want to sell them or not but I would like any info I can find on top of “value” such as age, region, exc.

Thanks!

Good users, but not really collectible. $5-25 each

How do I remove the glued on felt from an old antique tool and die tool chest?

I have my grandfather's old wooden tool and die tool chest that I want to use as a jewerly box. The felt lined drawers are dirty, oiley and badly worn. How do I go about removing that old lining which looks like a felt of some kind. Is there some kind of solvent that I can use to help loosen it?
Has anybody done this procedure before?

Hmmmm, sounds like you have a very interesting item there, I love old tool chests. I was going to tell you to just soak the felt lining with water, as it probably is old hide glue that will dissolve, but on second thought, that may harm the old wood in the chest drawer bottoms. Maybe try very carefully, to wet just small sections at a time and see if the glue loosens. Then again, maybe the best thing to do, if the lining is glued down tight, is to just cover right over it with new lining. Good luck and would like to know how you make out and if I come up with more ideas will try to get back to you.
PS: you will have to wait till the water soaks into the felt, a slow process.

How do I learn about an antique tool?

I bought an old tool at a junk shop and it appears to be a grease applicator of some sort. It is a small hatchet-shaped tool with a handle that screws off and on. There is a small hole in the head of the tool which connects to the shaft. I am guessing that grease was placed in the hollow shaft, the handle replaced and as the handle was screwed further down the shaft, grease was forced out the head. It is marked with TOMAHAWK MANUFACTURING CO. CLEVELAND, OH. Note sure about the date. I'm new to this site, can I post a picture of the tool?

Hmmm. I searched ebay and the internet for TOMAHAWK MANUFACTURING and could not find anything. If you have some web space where you can upload the picture and then put the link in your question so we can see the picture. That might help.

I'm not sure if this breaches YA's rules but if it is legite I think it should be OK.
