antiques furniture?
can anyone tell me if there is a value for chairs made for a specific person? I have a chair made specifically for m. Anna Hundley. It is to fit a person who was barely 4'*" tall. It has been re-cushioned but the wood is still intact, in its natural shape and color.
That is something that might be unique enough to make it on that show The Antique Roadshow. You could look them up and see if they will be touring in your area or nearby where you could visit. Regardless you could find out how much something like that would be worth. I have never heard of this person, but I am sure there might be someone out there that is a collector of chairs and would be fasinated by something like this. The more original pieces to it the better. Have you looked under the fabric to see if it has any of the old fabric left or any older more dated fabric? Anyhoo, I wish you luck on finding more information about it. Antiques roadshow site would be the first place to look and then maybe some local antique shops. They tend to rip some people off so do your research. The more information you have on the piece the better.

What are the chances of removing the smell of smoke from antiques, leather furniture, etc?
We recently lost our home to fire, but it was contained to 3 rooms and we were able to remove many things. The smell of smoke is terrible on most of it. I have an antique sewing machine, among other antiques that have tremendous sentimental value but am clueless as how to remove the smell without causing more damage. I also have leather furniture and many wood pieces. Any suggestions would be extremely appreciated. Thanks and a very Happy Easter to All... : ) Angie
Arm & Hammer baking soda can take the smell of smoke, sweat, and etc from furniture. You can get a box or two and apply a thick layer of it on the surface and leave it on for an hour. Then vacuum it off, and the smell should be gone.

Auction or estate sale? What's the best way to sell off furniture and antiques?
We're downsizing and need to get rid of some furniture and assorted antiques. Has anyone out there had experience dealing with auction houses or estate sale dealers?
Should we send the stuff to an auction house(some of the pieces are large)? Have an on-site auction? Have an estate-type sale? We're trying to decide which way to go.
Thanks for your help!

List an Auction on that site in your area. That'll help with advertising if you choose to do it yourself. Other than that I've never delt with an auction.

What color should I paint my new living room? I have lots of old medium colored wood furniture (antiques). Thx
I also want to know what type of carpet to choose. There will be a lot of traffic on it.
The antiques will definitely not be painted...thanks for your concern. There are four children ages 9-13 in the house. Although I like red - it might put them all in a bouncing mood.
Does anyone know a sight where I can go to try out colors, put in antiques (everywhere seems to show the modern furniture) and try it out?
Thanks again for your prompt and helpful answers.
Hi Again - Do you have any specific color names or brand names I can look up Please?
You could do any number of colors. Earth tones like beige, mocha, light green, yellow would all look good with browns. Do up an accent wall with a faux painting technique. I like those stamps of flowers or butterflies. I am planning on doing a room with maroon carpet and pink vertical blinds with a cream base coat and stamping blue and maroon butterflies on the wall.
I like Martha Stewart paint. I did a bedroom a color she called "goldfish." As the name implies it was quite orangey apricot. Painted the trim a dark red and put in light apricot carpet. A friend of ours painted clouds on the corner. It turned out really nice. My bed was made of rubber wood which looked like a dark reddish brown.
There's a color rule I read somewhere that the best designs are 60% one color 30% another and 10% accent. It also suggested using black for accents, like photo frames, a vase or a lamp base. With kids, you might want to consider using some kind of wood flooring and area rugs.
Hope this helped some.

I have mold growing on pieces of furniture in my house, antiques and others. How do I get rid of the mold?
I really don't want to get rid of the antiques, and some I won't. But how do I get rid of the mold growing. It is even growing on the window sills. The only thought that I have (besides water and bleach-and I am AFRAID to try it on the wood) is to get central air. Does insurance cover this, and is there any hope out there. All we have are antiques passed down from the 1800's, I could care less about the rest. What do I do?

We currently have a dehumidifier running (non-stop) in the basement and are going to get another one this weekend. With the weather how it has been, hot and rainy and extremely humid, that's the cause. I have every window open in the house-so the air is circulating. Today I cleaned most of it with bleach and water. I just hope that it stays away. Would central air work for future summers?
Please get a de-humidifier or two for now I doubt your insurance will cover this. This is a maintenance problem not a property damage claim. You need to go to a Sanitation Supply store and get a mildew cleaner (industrial cleaner). Explain what you have and they should supply the proper cleaner. Usually its sprayed on, Quite simple but effective and important. Spray everywhere even if you see no mildew this mildew could be in behind your walls , ceilings, attic, anywhere. You may want to call an air quality contractor or a contractor that services the insurance companies for property losses due to flood (water damage). your insurance agent would know someone or any insurance company will have a preferred contractor list that they use for this type of damage. Have this inspection done by a specialist as I mentioned above. Mildew is very harmful to your health as well as your property so please get this done.

What is the difference between Duncan Pfife and Duncan Phyfe antique furniture?
What is the difference between Duncan Pfife and Duncan Phyfe antique furniture? Is one worth more than the other? I'm looking a drop leaf table in great condition, but I know nothing about antiques. The tag says Duncan Pfife, but on ebay I only see Duncan Phyfe. Is there a difference? Thanks in advance.
Sorry to say, the difference is in the spelling only. You might want to do a little more research, in case the table is faux, and purposely mispelled.

How do I find the value of antiques and other wood furniture?
I need to have an estate sale and do not know what to charge.
my daughter just asked the same question last night.
The economy is down so be prepared to have your estimates low. Ebay is a bottom line indicator at best, sales are low and auctions that are selling are going for rock bottom prices. I have not sold on ebay since January because of this, my stuff is highly collectible and I won't give it away for the sake of quick cash.
Be prepared to hang onto your stuff if you can for top dollar. Trusting an 'expert' can be risky, unless you are strapped for cash and it's an emergency you are better served to research the value yourself. A garage sale is not where you will get top dollar for your goods. People are looking for bargains, not fair trade prices.
If your stuff is over a century old there are many university museums that will inspect your goods for free or a nominal fee.
The kind folks at Yale University inspected a desk that my grand dad bought years ago and found that it was an original Litchfield county piece from the 1760's. In the eighties it ticketed about 30K. Now if only my Dad will let me have it.
