How do you paint those art deco wardrobes and get a good finish?

I brought some second hand art deco wardrobes i think they are made from walnut, they have a very shabby chic look to them. I want to paint them a distressed white. How would i go about doing this they are solid wood and have a lacquer or varnish on them.
I m looking for a shabby chic finish that would last for years with the maybe odd touch up. Can anyone who knows how do do this tell me how i can go about this and what the best kind of paint would be to do this. Any answers would be much appreciated

I would give them a good clean with sugar soap ( can be bought at any DIY shop) then rub down with sand paper and clean again to get the dust off, then brush or roll on a couple of coats of primer and undercoat before painting them the colour you want. Good luck.

art project...art deco/art novae...Bob Dylan?

Hi.
I have an art project (painting) of art deco or art novae(sp?) and the person i'm doing is Bob Dylan. I have the quote "No one is free, even the birds are chained to the sky" and i have bob dylan standing and a bird in the sky. origionally i had a chain linking dylan and the bird and i have one where three big links connect the "e" from "free" and the "e" from "even" and then the bird is flying and dylan is standing there. Maybe a cat at the bottom showing the bird cannot land. im not a good artist and i dont really find that i like many of the art novae/deco posters but it is my assignment. I need further help because im not sure what to do with my design to make it more art deco/noveau....thank you.
my teacher was saying to a kid in my class to have a gun and a rose because he is doing guns and roses or how you always see a flower and skull for the grateful dead. i guess bob dylan is always seen with a harmonica...im not how to incorporate it all.
uhh i think the harmonica thing clashes with the idea of nature and stuff in this type of art...

art noveau (pronounced: New Vo)

We don't always get what we want .... is the greatest line from any Dylan song. It is so true. It is meaningful and it applies to every generation.

I would see Bob reaching for something he really wants in the deco age and in the noveau age. but it is always just out of reach.

Is burlesque art deco or art nouveau?

I have to make a painting for art class demonstrating either the art deco style or art nouveau. It has to be a dance poster so i was thinking about a burlesque dancing theme.but im not sure if burlesque dancing was more towards the art deco period or art nouveau period.

Burlesque is broad enough to work with either one.

American burlesque often had some sort of cultural or historical theme to get it by the censors. That is if you call it belly dancing and dress the girl up in a harem costume, you could get away with it. I was thinking of Klimt's women, which seemed to blend to use that ancient look combined with a modern sensuality.

My bedroom furniture is an art deco style from the late 20's . The color is a bleached oak .?

I really don't want to paint it and would love to find a style that compliments it , I was thinking creams and whites . I am going for a very clean non fuss look . I also have an old , movie board , from the 20,s that i would love to use also in creams and white a hint of blue . am i on the right track , or does any one have any suggestions

Yes you are on the right track.
Find some interesting furniture and accessories that will look nice in the room once they are painted.
I think colors that would compliment that style would be a sage green ... some washed out slate blue color and cremes. You can achieve this by first painting a piece white .. let it dry... then use the slate blue paint lightly on a rag... and simply wipe it on until you get the desired effect.
This will be a brand new updated contemporary twist on art deco furniture. Create a style all your own.
Don't forget to add organic touches. Some nice woody green plants in a light green or even a hint of yellow to the leaves would look great in this room. No dark green... just wouldn't match.
Art pieces such such as some leafy wrought iron designs to hang on the wall would be nice. Doesn't matter what color the art piece is that you buy...just spray paint it to match the room decor.

I have taken up painting again and want to know what I should paint?

I gave up painting for 5 years and finally went down today and bought new paints. I can;t figure out what a good subject would be. I don't want to paint naked ladies - please give me something else to paint. I usually do contemporary, art-deco type work.

When I went back to drawing, I bought an art book and copied great masters. That way I could re-aquire my skills.

Is this an Art Deco Table?

I found this table in an antique store and my parents have an end table similar. I'm not sure if it is really Art Deco or a reproduction. Are there any tips anyone can give to help me? It is a coffee table with a blue mirror top. The mirror has lines etched in it about an inch from the sides forming a design. The wood has been painted so I cannot identify the wood. It does need work, but I am willing to restore if it is authentic. Thank you for your help!

- Who is the most well known figure of the Abstract Expressionish movement?

- Where did Abstract Expressionism start?

- What type of people were usually the subject of Harlem Renaissance paintings?

I've been searching for the answers to these questions but I can't find any, or I find too many different answers. If you can answer any of these that would be AWESOME, thanks!

I don't know all these answers, and I'm not going to tell you all these answers, but I will help you on some info. I hope next time you will either pay attention in class or learn how to research.

--Picasso is one of the many founders of cubism; it was inspired by African art. Cubism is acutally a form of Art Deco.
--Exhibition International des Arts Decoratifs is the ridiculous name that Art Deco came from. Actually I think the name is longer than that, but that's the common reference.
--Art Deco was popular between the 1920's and 30's. That was around the same time period that the Harlem Renaissance was popular.
--I don't know the guy personally, but I would think that Willem de Kooning's favorite were his works of women. He was an abstract expressionist and most early works of his were of women.
--Abstract Expression started around the 40's and lasted give or take 20 years. Jackson Pollock is probably the most well-known figure in the Abstract Expression movement.
--The Juggler was created sometime in the 1930's.

Good luck in finding the answers to the rest of your questions.
