rare coins?

my great grandmother recently passed and left my brother and i with a rare coin. it is a half dollar, that is and octogonal shape. it is dated 1871, and has a woman with wavy hair on it. it is in perfect condtion and was saved in a cardboard pill box from 1935. we dont want to sell it, we are just curious as to what it is worth. if anyone knows any good websites to check out, or knows anything about this rare coin i would really appreciate it! thanks in advance.

does anyone know how to sale rare and exspensive coins?

i have alot of rare coins and some of them are worth close to a million or over a million. i dont know how to sale my coins. how do i get in touch with a coin collector who is willing to pay over a million for these rare coins. i recently found out that they are worth this amount and now to want to sell them.

1 - Take your coin to a local coin dealer (trustworthy ones can be found - shop around). It never hurts to get a second opinion. They will be able to tell you so much more by evaluation the condition of the coins. They will also know the amount minted and what it is going for in today's market.

2 - Try posting pictures on this website (there are many experts here that can help you evaluate it - there also may be people willing to buy if you are trying to sell):
http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/default.asp

3 - Repost this question and include pictures. You can use websites like http://www.photobucket.com and include the link in your question.

Good luck!

P.S. You should not clean your coins. Most coin collectors see cleaning a coin as the equivalent of stripping down antique furniture and refinishing it.

When cleaning, the surface metal of the coin is often stripped. Anything used to scrub the coin will leave scratches (even 100% pure silk will leave hairline scratches). Most cleaning products will have some type of reaction with the coin's metal and the surface metal can also be removed in this manner.

Your best bet is to leave the coins alone. Cleaning the coin will leave traces - which can be found by the knowledgeable collector - who in turn will not buy the cleaned coin. Also if you ever wanted to send your coin into a grading company, they can recognize signs of cleaning and will send your coin back in a "cleaned" slab (also called a "body bag" in the coin world) - which is usually a greatly decreased value.

If you absolutely must must must clean your coins do not use the method described above as it will react with the metal in your coin. Use 100% acetone (do not use fingernail polish remover!). It must be 100% pure because other additives will react with the coin metal. Place your coin(s) in the solution for several minutes (do not leave in for long periods of time). Rinse your coin(s) in distilled water. Next remove your coins and either pat dry with a soft cloth or allow the coin to air dry (air drying is better as you don't risk scratching the coin with the cloth). NEVER scrub your coins!

I would still advise you to leave your coins as they are. They may not be bright and shiny but that is what most collectors prefer.

Which is a better investment Rare Coins or Gold Bars?

Hi, I am interested in investing in physical gold. In your opinion, which is a better investment - Historic rare coins that have collector value or straight gold bars bought as close to market price as possible?

How much time do you want to invest in research?

Buying historic rare coins requires you to do some research to know if you're getting a good deal. You are also betting on two things, the value of the gold, and the value of the rarity. If you buy gold bullion, then, you're just betting on the value of gold. I'd go for the pure gold bet if I was looking to bet on gold, since I don't know much about values of rare coins. However, if you want to take the time to learn about rare coins, you have the possibility of increasing your wealth from two sources with rare coins.

Then again, you could also invest in gold mineing companies which would make more money when the price of gold goes up, and are easier to store and trade than gold bars.

I hope that helps.

Selling on ebay rare coins and women's clothing question?

I have been thinking of selling women's clothing on ebay for extra money. Does anyone here sell on ebay for a living or extra cash and can give some pointers on what works best when selling clothing items? Also, i have some very rare coins that I have had for a long time and I would like to sell them too but am afraid I won't get what they are worth on ebay. I think they could get top dollar from a collector but have no idea how to find one to sell to.

What are some commonly circulated, but rare/valuable coins?

I'm going to my local banks and sorting through coins and trying to find things that are more rare/valuable. What are some common rare/valuable coins in circulation?

Error coins are out there as well as doubled dies mostly in the cent. There are still 40% silver 1/2 dollars out there in bank rolls. With all the state quarters there are errors there also. A book on error coins would help so see a coin dealer or maybe a library. I do not collect them so only have the ones listed in the Red Book (guide to U.S. Coins). the cents to look for are 1970-S small date actually it is a high 7. And the following doubled dies 1969-S obverse, 1971-S obv,1972 obv, 1983 reverse and 1995 obv. There is also a 1984 double ear as well as the cents that a proof die was used on the reverse. They are 1992-D close AM (the AM in America almost touch) & 1999 wide AM. You need to pick up a book or two for they will really help your quest.

Where should I take these very old and rare expensive coins to get money for them? E-bay?

I have a ton of rare coins that my stepfather needs money for, like old nazi coins and japanese and chinese coins, i just need to know where i will not get ripped off. Thanks.

Ebay is good but check Ebay auctions to see what people are getting for those types of coins before you do you own auctions). The coins may be old but might not be as rare as you think.

Look in your local phone book for coin dealers and check them out. If you do go to any coin dealer, do not appear overly anxious to sell. That is when you can be taken advantage of.

Good luck.

How to determine the value of old coins and how to clean potentially rare coins?

I have a bunch of old coins from India and I am looking for a way to clean them.
Also I would loke to know how much they are worth.

don't clean them
you can use a soft brush to remove loose dirt but cleaning them reduces the "patina of age" and also can clean a little of the coins surface away
