Silver coins?

What holds more value for silver coins, coins that are new or old coins? I have a set of both old and new but I want to know which one hold more value.

Also is the value of silver based on the "ounce" or "type of coin" that goes into circulation?

It depends on which is the rarest and the grade of the coin. There are no circulating silver coins. The silver value is far more than face. Most countries in the mid 1960 stopped striking silver coinage for general circulation. When it come to bullion coins such as the silver eagle with a face value of $1 it sells for at least 18 to 20 times that, then it is the one ounce of silver in it unless it happens to be a low mintage or special one, that had few minted. Another thing what do you mean by old, old is the 1800's and before.

How many troy ounces of silver is there in American silver coins?

I would like to know how many troy ounces of silver are in any coins pre-dating 1964.

I did a little research and found out that $100 of 90% silver coin is 71.5 troy ounces of silver. So it is 0.715 troy ounces to the dollar. This means that it takes about $1.40 in silver coin dated 1964 or before to equal one troy ounce of pure silver.

Also be sure to save all half dollars dated 1965 to 1970, since these are 40% silver. About six of these also will yield one troy ounce of silver. (The calculation is $3.15 per troy ounce)

Another source of silver is the nickels dated 1943, 1944 and 1945 (and also some of the 1942's as well). These are 35% silver, and will yield one troy ounce of silver for every $3.60 (or 72 coins).

Does the Central Bank of the Philippines buy Gold and Silver coins?

Does the Central Bank of the Philippines buy Gold and Silver coins? I am a coin collector and I wanted to know if the Central Bank of the Philippines would buy Gold or Silver bullion coins from USA or Canada? I've heard that they have a gold and silver buying program.

Can anyone let me know what their policy is regarding buying and selling gold/silver coins?

......yes they are and even the small enterprises like pawnshops.....

Is there any way to purchase newly minted silver dollar coins at a discounted dealer mark-up?

I'm a novice at investing in silver coins. Coin dealers are claiming a $1.50 fee per coin and it doesn't matter if I buy one or a hundred or more...the fee is still the same. I'm interested in about a hundred and I feel that a $1.50 dealer fee per coin for that many coins is a little steep. How can I get a better rate?

How do I get my silver coins appraised?

I have a bunch of silver coins, I don't think any of them are worth a whole lot because they are circulated not "mint" and I really don't know much about coins... so how do I find an honest appraiser and how much do they generally charge? I wouldn't want to get them appraised for more than they're worth of course.

Actually most coin dealers are honest but need to make a profit. The bigger the dealer the less you get for he has more overhead. Most dealers when they are not busy will go through your coins for you and tell you what they would pay. There is no rule that you can not go to a second dealer and get his opinion too. See if you can find a Coins or Coinage magazine, inside they have a retail price guide. The prices are usually higher than dealers sell the coins for and of course you would get less from a dealer. the idea here is at least you will get an idea if your coins are scarce or not. If it sells for a dollar then you know it is not worth much but if the price is $50 in say grade fine then you know the coin has value. Also see if a coin club is in your area they can help in pricing and grading the coins.

how do you melt down silver coins into bars?

I would like to know what equiptment I would need and how to do it. Also should you remove the extra metal from the coins so its 99.999% silver and if so how would you do that?

Previous poster makes a good point - why would you even want to do this?? If I'm a silver dealer & you come to me with this big block of metal, how do I know it's silver?? Maybe it's lead, maybe you're trying to unload a piece of junk on me.

In the early 80's when silver got to $50 an ounce, people were melting down the family silver & trying to sell it. Dealers wern't buying this junk. They didn't know if it was pure, they didn't know what was in it. You bring me a silver coin, and I know exactly what's in it, and who it comes from.

Smelting metal is a fairly complicated process & not for amatures (in my opinion). If you really want to know how to do this, a google search on silver & smelting should help.

Attention numismatists and investors: Does tarnish negatively affect the value of silver coins?

I bought silver coins recently and some of the plastic slips they came in are not air tight. I am afraid that they may tarnish over time and their value will be affected negatively. Currently they are in nearly perfect uncirculated condition.

If the value of the coins would be harmed from tarnish I would like to preserve them with some type of casing or other product that would protect them. Thanks in advance!

When you purchase coins, most of the time the package you receive them in is not meant for long term storage, it is the most convenient/cheapest way for the dealer. Absolutely move them to a better environment, preferably PVC free.

While toning and patina CAN add value to a coin, it is pretty rare that it does. Most collectors like their coins as bright as possible, (without being cleaned), and will pay a premium for that. Most toning and patina that adds value to a coin is for ancient coins, which have all been cleaned, and an attractive hard green patina will add value to.
