Tax Errors - How To Get Money Back?
If a tax preparer makes a mistake (calculating errors) and I pay too much tax, how does it work? Will the US Tax Department give me my money back, or does the tax preparer’s liability insurance company have to pay for my financial lost?
First of all, make your preparer aware of this. Major tax prep firms deal with this (unfortunately) regularly, either due to our error or because of missing info from the taxpayer. If you've paid too much, you can choose to either get a refund now, or have it applied to next year's tax liability.
The great thing is that if you had this done by a reputable firm, they will walk you through it, and ensure that the proper forms are filed if necessary. Give them an opportunity to fix their error and make things right. IF THEY DON'T, run don't walk out of there and get thee to someone who does. I work in the field, and it is one of my biggest pet peeves when preparers don't back their work. everyone, even those with tons of education, makes mistakes. The problems arise when we don't hold ourselves accountable and fix them - and apologise profusely.
If you need help, let me know. I AM NOT soliciting business, but I have resources to find someone good in your area who could help you at little or no charge, assuming the original preparer doesn't.

Can I claim back phone call chargers after an error for money had me ringing around for 2 hours?
A certain phone company that I left in January after moving home sent me out a debt collectors letter, 6 months after closing the account. After ringing them and on the phone for an hour they admitted it was a mistake. 3 Weeks later a letter arrived again and they threatened to take me to court. I once again called them and an hour later same answer I dont owe them money. Can I claim back call costs to there 0870 number?
You should be able to claim back the cost of the calls and the cost of your time. I know how this is how the Financial Ombudsman works and I guess Oftel would be the same - good luck!

I asked to see a copy of the check to see who it was from, but they could not tell me. What if the realise they have made a mistake. Will they ask me to return the money?
they wont ask...they will just notify you by mail and tell you when they are deducting the money from your account.
Are misprinted dollar bills worth more money?
I have a $20 bill and the top is cut off a little at the top diagonally, its noticeable. I know that coins the printing that have printing errors are worth extra money. Is it the same for dollar bills?
I was recently paid some money for the sale of shares, now I am told I was paid in error do I have to repay?
I was entitled the shares with a previous employer, but learned that I would forfeit the shares if employed for less than 3 years. I left after 2.5 years. I was paid for the shares in a buy out and was then told that an administrative error had been made and I had to repay the full amount (£209). Do I have to repay the monies, as this was not my error, and if so do I have to repay in full in one go. I am a single parent, working but claiming Working and Child Tax Credits. I do not have the funds available to pay this amount back. I was told in the letter than I have 14days in which to repay the monies.
You must pay it back. You knew you were not entitled to this money as you had left your employment.
Ask for longer than 14 days to pay. That's the only hope you have.
