silver necklace?
what does it mean if stamped on a silver necklace it has the numbers 925 and another stamp which i cant make out
The .925 stamp is the hallmark for sterling silver. It means that 92.5% of the metal is silver, the other 7.5% is another metal added (alloyed) with the silver to increase the silver's strength. Pure/fine silver (.999) is far too soft for many jewelry uses.
The .925 stamp does not indicate what the silver was alloyed with. In the United States it only means that 92.5% of the metal is silver. The usual alloy of silver is copper. However, recently new alloys have hit the market that contain metals from the platinum family (rhodium, palladium) and other metals to inhibit the tarnishing process that effects sterling. These new alloys are normally more expensive than traditional sterling because of the cost of the platinum-family metals and because most soldering of these new sterlings require 10k gold solder instead of traditional silver solder to have a good color match.
The other mark is the maker's mark/trademark. In the United States FTC regulations require that any piece that is hallmarked with a precious metal mark must also have a maker's mark. If there is no maker's mark, it is illegal to hallmark the piece even if it is sterling, 14k, 18k, etc.

how do i clean my silver necklace?
my boyfriend kindly asked if he could clean my silver tiffany necklace and bracelet set yesterday.he couldn't find the fairy liquid so used BLEACH!the set went black.i scrubbed for a while but no joy.then i left it in water. The black has gone a cream colour and it scrapes off.any suggestions on how to get it back to normal.
Things You’ll Need:
1/4 cup baking soda
1/4 cup salt
1/4 cup liquid dish soap
1/2 gallon water
Large pot
Aluminum foil
Big plastic stir spoon
Colander or strainer
Towel
Stove top
Step 1:
Line the inside of large pot with aluminum foil.
Step 2:
Pour all ingredients into the lined pot and stir with plastic spoon.
Step 3:
Gather the sterling silver jewelry that needs cleaning and gently drop them into the pot. Be sure to count the silver to ensure nothing gets thrown out later with the aluminum foil.
Step 4:
Bring the solution to a low boil. Let boil for about 4-5 minutes.
Step 5:
Remove from heat. After the solution cools a bit, use a colander or strainer and pour out contents of pot. Rinse with cool water.
Step 6:
Count your pieces as you lay them on a towel to dry.
***************
Step 1:
Choose the right toothpaste. The key to using toothpaste as a silver jewelry cleaner is the baking soda. Do not use gel toothpaste, as it usually does not contain baking soda. And, avoid toothpastes that boast tartar-control or whitening power, as they may include chemicals that can harm your silver.
Step 2:
Use a soft dampened cloth to clean more delicate jewelry or softer silvers. Wet the silver and add a dab of toothpaste. Remember that a little goes a long way. Rub gently with the moistened cloth until polished.
Step 3:
Add a bit more toothpaste if the cloth becomes dark with tarnish and continue cleaning. Simply wash the darkened toothpaste foam from the jewelry piece, rinse the cloth and begin again.
Step 4:
Scrub your silver jewelry gently with a toothbrush for stubborn tarnish or hard to reach grooves. Try to find an old worn toothbrush or buy a new soft-bristled toothbrush to prevent scratching.
Step 5:
Rinse the polished silver jewelry in warm water and dry with a soft towel.
******************
Tips & Warnings:
Toothpaste is an effective cleansing agent not just for your silver jewelry but also for your larger silver pieces.
While toothpaste may be the best and most economical method for cleaning silver jewelry, it can be abrasive and may scratch more delicate silver items. Always test a small area first, in order to determine whether your jewelry piece should be cleaned with toothpaste or not.

How do I clean my silver necklace that was stuck in the drain for weeks?
My silver necklace just got retrieved from the drain pipe today. The pendant has black on it and some brown spots. How should I clean it to get rid of the spots without harming the silver?
Make a paste out of baking soda and vinager. Use an old toothbrush to scrub at it. Rinse it often in clean water. Once it is clean blot it dry on a towel. If it needs to be polished after cleaning it, use a silver polishing cloth.

How can I remove the tarnish from a sterling silver necklace?
I have a sterling silver necklace that has sentimental value to me, but I have not worn it for a long time. It is black with tarnish. Is there any way to remove this and make it shiney silver again using home products?
You used an antibacterial hand wash its from Palmolive and the colour is orange. Put some in your hand and clean the necklace with rubbing the palms together and the hand wash will turn green keep doing that unit the green colour stops and let it air dry.

What is the red-ish tarnish on my silver necklace and how can i remove it?
My silver necklace that i received a year ago now has a reddish, copper looking tarnish on it. Is there any way i can remove it or is it permanent? thanks!
ask the jeweler if anything can be done to fix it, i wouldn't just start using home remedies because you may induce more damage,

What do I do to preserve my fake silver necklace?
I have a very cheap friendship necklace that I sometimes leave in the same room as my shower, so the steam gets on it, and lately it's been turning a rust color.
I know it's probably not rusting, but rather the fake silver is coming off. What do I do to make it silvery again? Are there any places that would clean such a cheap peice of jewelry?
it is very simple.... get some clear nail polish and gently apply it on the necklace with the brush.. i use it on all of my fake jewelry... it should work
