I am still on the hunt for the sterling silver snowman! Where to go to find something this old/hard to find? Also, whats the difference b/w a charm & a pendant?

Restoring sterling silver that has been emersed in chlorine?

I gave my boyfriend a very special sterling silver ring for Christmas. Couple days ago we went to sit in a very much chlorine filled jacuzzi and we didn't think of the toll it would take on his ring. Any suggestions as to how to restore it? If possible at all.

Emersed? Isn't it IMMERSED?

Sterling silver will react to many chemicals. Poor choice of metal. Next time spend a bit more and buy white gold. Better to buy a quality item than just any old thing just for the hell of it.

What is the difference between Silver plated and Sterling Silver?

I'm thinking about getting a necklace (a dog tag to be specific) and they have the option of either silver plated or Sterling silver. The sterling Silver is MUCH MUCH more expensive. I know htat it probably turns your skin green but if its a dog tag and it doesnt really come in contact with my skin too much would it be okay to buy the silver plated?

Sterling silver is real silver and it should have a 925 stamp on it. plated silver mean it is not real. the silver color is artifficial, it's sprayed or painted on.

How do I clean sterling silver with at-home ingredients?

I have a sterling silver necklace and it's completely brown. I don't have a polishing cloth or any cleaner for it. Any suggestions?

the best jewelery cleaner in the world, including precious stones, is simply denture cleaner tablets like "Steradent"

Drop a tablet in warm water with whatever jewels & metals you want cleaned & let the fizzy tablet do the hard work.

A few minutes later - up to 30 minutes soaking - just rinse it al off & you won't believe how clean & sparkling it all is, even fine grade chains for lockets etc.

One small box of tablets will last you for YEARS and you will always have them on hand whenever you want to clean your jewellery.

You can also use a toothbrush dipped in lemon juice & then dipped in salt and scrub the metal with this.

How do you clean sterling silver jewelry at home?

I would like to know how to clean a necklace that is sterling silver. What are some home remedies that will help?

Here are some ways to clean your jewelry at home.
I have used of all of these & they really work.

1. The quickest & easiest way that I have found to clean my jewelry at home is to use the sterling silver jewelry cleaner that wal-mart sells for $4 dollars. This works great on my sterling silver jewelry that has mild tarnishing. (NOTE do not put jewelry with gem stones in to any mild or strong cleaner because it may damage some stones, this would ruin a peal fast!)

2. Another quick way to clean your jewelry but I do not recommend it because it has strong chemicals is Tarnex. If your jewelry is very tarnished (black) Tarnex will clean it. (Only use Tarnex on jewelry that is not plated. Never put jewelry with gem stones in Tarnex it will make you cry)

3. For sterling silver jewelry with gem stones , I would recommend whitening tooth past. It will take a little work but this is one of the safest ways to clean your jewelry. Get the tooth past very bubbly with a old tooth brush then leave the tooth past on your tarnished jewelry for about 5mins (some times more if very tarnished). After 5mins brush your jewelry till the shine shines through. Rinse with warm water & towel dry. (repeat is you need to) This works great for most of my sterling silver jewelry, it also works great on gold & diamonds.

4. A sterling silver cleaning cloth is the best way I have found to clean my sterling silver jewelry. It will really bring out the shine in your tarnished sterling silver. (also works great on gold). I forget what name brand the one I have is but I know of a site that sells them.

One more note do not put Antiqued jewelry in 1 or 2. I had a pretty cleric antiqued ring that now looks totally new because I cleaned it with the wal-mart cleaner. If you want your Antiqued sterling silver to be clean but still look antiqued clean it with a cleaning cloth because you are more in control how much tarnish you remove.

They are the same, almost all 'silver jewellery' is actually sterling silver.
Pure silver (aka 'fine silver') is way too soft to be used for jewellery, as it can be softer than lead when freshly annealed. Sterling Silver is a silver alloy mixture. It is by weight 92.5% silver, 7.5% copper. It was invented in the 12th century and got it's name in England, where it was used as currency. Sterling silver has its drawbacks; unlike pure silver, it tarnishes and is subject to firescale. A few of the newer alloys (like Argentium) use germanium in place of copper, to acheive a brighter, tarnish free appearance.
Sometimes silver is plated to prevent tarnishing. Quality silver is plated with rhodium, a metal similar to platinum and completely resistant to tarnishing. Rhodium is the most expensive precious metal (about $175 per gram) and it costs about $20 to plate a ring. Cheaper silver jewellery is plated with chromium. Chromium looks good at first, but it often cracks. It is also more difficult to repair as it tends to blister when heat is applied, turn pink in cleaning acids (firescale pickling solution), and is very difficult to remove with most professional chemicals. Most silver jewellery from China is chrome plated, and be careful when buying jewellery off eBay.

In short:
Virtually all silver jewellery is sterling silver, as pure silver is too soft to be practical. Beware of chrome-plated silver, as it will be full of problems in the future.

Can a Sterling Silver ring be sized from smaller to larger?

I have a size 8 I need to make a size ten. Can I take it to the jeweler to be sized. I know gold and such can...I just wondered if it was the same for sterling silver?

Yes it can be resized larger. Be sure to take it to a reputable place. I had one that greened my finger after the resizing.
