What would be an easy way to create a Victorian costume?
For Halloween this year, I'm (hopefully) going as one of my favourite book characters, and seeing as the book is set in Victorian England, how would I go about making my own costume? Are there any patterns online, and what kind of material would be the best?

simplicity.com then go to costumes, adult and i think under period costumes. my wedding dress was a black and purple victorian era dress, it turned out beautiful too!

Where can I buy a victorian era costume?

I need to dress up in the victorian era kind of way. Were can I get a costume for a boy that resembles that time period?

Ebay is the best!!!

Where can I find a Victorian tea costume for under $100?

I need one in less than a month for a tea party at my school. I need a larger size and I've looked on ebay and lots of costume shops but they are either extremely expensive or they sell southern belle costumes which are not quite right for the tea party. Any ideas where I might be able to find a costume? I've looked at local boutiques in yahoo local search but none that have what I need.

Etsy is a really nice website that sells everyone's handmade items. And if you look through the clothing category (and if you have the patience) I think you could find some really nice dresses for under a $100. And if not, it is still an awesome site. The only drawback with clothes on that site is that the seller sometimes does not not have a variety of sizes.

How to create a costume resembling the ones worn in the Victorian Era?

Unfortunately, the project is due really soon, leaving me with very little time to work out. I'm supposed to be representing the working class (nearly impoverished) in Victorian society and I really don't what how to stitch up a costume soon. My sewing machine is broken, but I can sew pretty well and quickly. I just need ideas on on how to make a quick costume and what kind of fabric is best to use.

For the lower classes, try a full long dark skirt -- grey or brown, not black -- without ruffles. The fabric, if you have your choice, should be roughish. Use a squarish cut (taper it at the waist only a little; rely on plenty of gathering instead.) Looking svelte was not a concern of the working class. A bunchy waist was not a bad thing. The blouse should be moderatley well-fitted, only a little loose. It should (sorry about your skin) also be a little rough. It should have long sleeves and come up to the base of the neck. It may or may not have a real collar. The buttons, if you're being authentic, would be wood. Of course, hooks and eyes were at least as common as buttons. These would be hidden from sight under the placket where the blouse comes together. Use the same kind of fastening at the cuff. Elastic was eally not used much by the lower classes.

An apron is almost certainly a necessity; it should cover most of the front of your clothing. It doesn't need to be white.

It really would most likely be a blouse and skirt. Go with plain colors. Oddly enough, at that period of history, prints -- even plaids in many cases -- were reserved for the well-off.

Anyway, feel free to email me for more detail if you like. Click on my avatar for an email link. I can tell you simply how to come up with your own pattern if needs be. I know Simplicity and McCall's both have a selection Victorian-era costume patterns, but it's mainly later Victorian (yes, there;s a difference) and doesn't include anything for the workers.

Some fabric stores that have classes also let you come in and use the sewing machines for a small fee when no class is scheduled. You might want to look into that.

Help on a DIY victorian-era halloween costume?

I'm making a sort of Lolita/Victorian/Harlot-ish costume for myself, and I need help with costume pieces. I don't want it to be too sleazy, but a bit sexy, nonetheless. I want to keep it as cheap as possible, but it still needs to look good. Think sort of the dancer's coustumes from Moulin Rouge (the movie) or the music video for The Killer's Mr. Brightside. Thanks!

if you lived in the Victorian era, and were going to a costume ball, who would you have dressed as?

I am costuming a play and it is based in the late 1800's. There is a masked ball and I am trying to think of characters to put my characters in as? I did think of greek gods/goddesses, Ceasar...but ??? who else would work?

http://www.vam.ac.uk/index.html is the link for the Victoria and Albert museum. If you contact them they might be able to help provide excellent information, especially since they have a whole museum dedicated to the time frame you are looking at.
