Yes, you can. It's legal. But the supply is small and not every city have open shops. The prices are above market rate as well.
In Hong Kong, jewel shops are abundant along Nathan Road on Kowloon side.

Coins from china?

My mother has they coins I believe they are Chinese. I would love to know about them if anyone can identify them. Thanks ahead of time!

These two coins are from China (actually, I have the right one).
The one at the right side was commonly used in 1895-1910 period. And based on my knowledge, this one is worth 500 RMB today in Chinese marker (which may need to be divide by 8 or so to fit your currency, but I guess it may worth more in your country) .
As to the left side one, I'm surprised to say it was created in my province (haha). But this one is not so widely used as the above one (because I havn't see it before). So, I guess it may worth even more.

The word memento means that is is not a real coin and worth less than $1

I have recently been ripped off on eBay for a silver coin. I am a little pissed off about that and would really like to know a good site or place to get chinese silver coins. (please don't say go to china)

Go to www.apmex.com. They are reputable, reliable and reasonably priced. I don't know if they have Chinese silver at this time, but they just may.
